Search for life to shape future Mars missions

As NASA?s Curiosity rover prepares to get its wheels in motion on Mars, the space agency is set to issue a new look at where exploration of the Red Planet could go in the years and decades to come ? based on the theme "Seeking the Signs of Life."

The report, stemming from a Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration meeting in Houston in June, is headed for a late August/September release. Former veteran NASA program manager Orlando Figueroa has been leading the appraisal under the wing of a newly established Mars Program Planning Group which was tasked with reformulating the agency?s Mars Exploration Program.

The planning group is taking a look at how NASA will continue exploring Mars beyond the missions currently operating today, which now includes the Curiosity rover. The $2.5 billion Mars rover Curiosity landed on the Red Planet on Aug. 5 (PDT) in a flawless touchdown. The flagship rover, which is already beaming home amazing photos of Mars, is expected to spend two years exploring Mars' Gale Crater to determine if the region could have ever supported microbial life.

Recently, deep cuts in NASA's budget for Mars led to the shakeup in the space agency?s plans for robotic exploration. Another factor behind the new report is the overlapping requirements of NASA?s long-range plan to dot the Red Planet with human footprints.

Deep budget cuts, new tech
Mars planners are assessing international partnerships that could be highly enabling, especially as exploration activities become increasingly complex. Such partnerships could be at the mission or instrument level, and they could involve scientists from around the globe. [ Boldest Mars Missions in History ]

The June get-together of Mars experts made a strong case that missions flown in the coming decade could yield realistic steps toward Mars Sample Return. That pathway also would push advances in our understanding of Mars and certify key technologies that can lead to a humans-to-Mars initiative.

For example, work is under way to develop inflatable heat shields and larger parachutes.

?These will be tested in a program about a year from now,? said Charles Elachi, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory here.

?You?ll see that in this Mars Program Planning Group output,? said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate.

?They are looking at mixing technology with increasing capability over time ? leading up to putting larger things on the surface,? Grunsfeld said. Adopting those technologies would help put objects even larger than the 1-ton Curiosity rover on Mars, he told SPACE.com.

Less expensive Mars probes are also on NASA?s agenda.

And there?s no lack of ideas. Gliders and balloons, ground-thumping penetrators, deep drilling platforms, slinky robot snakes, and even sensor-laden tumbleweed-like vehicles are on the table. Toss into the mix an assortment of Mars orbiters to perform a variety of tasks, such as sniffing out traces of biologically produced methane.

No gimmicks on Mars
?It can?t just be a gimmicky thing,? Doug McCuistion, director of the NASA Mars Exploration Program, told SPACE.com. ?This is ? and needs to remain ? a scientifically driven program. So anything that comes out of Orlando?s Mars Program Planning Group I will expect to be scientifically and technologically viable and useful.?

McCuistion said the group is to provide pathways or portfolios with mission and technology options that can be adjusted, manipulated and sequenced differently based on programmatic factors as well as budgetary factors.

?So I?m expecting it to provide us some flexibility for planning. Lots of options, lots of ideas, lots of possibilities ? all of which have feasibility that we can use to build the next portfolio set,? McCuistion said.

Seeking the signs of life
The goal is to establish a plan with a 20-year horizon, McCuistion added.

?We?re thinking into the early 2030s ? partly because President Obama?s challenge was humans in the area of Mars in 2033. So we?re kind of using that as an anchor point to plan backwards from.

?The entire Mars science community is at that point of taking that next step,? McCuistion said. ?The Mars Science Laboratory transitions us from 'Follow the water' to seeking the signs of life ? so that?s where we are headed.?

Review: Symphony for PC ? Video Games Reviews, Cheats | Geek ...

You?ve probably heard the song dozens of times. You know all the cues, all the tempo changes ? so you know when they?re coming. In Symphony, a malevolent intelligence is corrupting your music and sending its minions against you. As you vaporize one after another, you?ll notice something bizarre; it?s all happening perfectly in time with the music.

Symphony is a game that takes your music, and morphs it into a 2D shooter with wonderful visuals and a really engaging upgrade system. This is a new independent title that was just added to the catalog on Good Old Games, Desura, Impulse, Origin, and Steam. Can it stand up to the big name developers?

Gameplay

Symphony allows you to filter your music by artist or album. The selected track will be analyzed, which only takes a few seconds, then you have to choose a difficulty level. The easier difficulty levels are all you get at first, but they?re still fairly challenging.

At its most basic, Symphony is a top-down shooter. There is a glowing equalizer at the top of the screen that reflects the music you?ve chosen. The enemies flow in from all sides, sometimes moving quickly back out of play, and other times diving right at you. You can really get a feel for when the enemy craft will appear from the tempo and beat of the song. A faster tempo means the enemy will be maneuvering faster, and a faster beat means there will be more of them. There are plenty of games that tailor the experience to a song, but Symphony does it better than any that I?ve ever seen.

Your ship is controlled with mouse movements, which is just like dragging a cursor. Weapons are fired by holding the left or right mouse buttons (depending on your settings). Some enemy units are more powerful than others, and you?ll quickly figure out which are the greatest threats so you can concentrate your fire. As you blow them out of the sky, each vanquished foe will drop a glowing yellow music note. These notes will raise your ?inspiration? score.

Symphony is very clever in how it makes use of the inspiration pick ups. The notes are dropped all over the screen, and in addition to giving you points, they repair your ship. When a baddie collides with you, or hits you with a projectile, your ship is damaged. Your weapons will begin to go offline as you take damage, so you have to be aggressive about moving around and getting those notes if you want to stay in the game.

Each time you are killed, it takes about five seconds to come back. While there is no limit to the number of lives, each failure means you miss out on inspiration points and you take an additional point penalty. Enemies also drop firepower upgrades on occasion, and death erases those. You just won?t be able to hit your goals if you die too often. I like this approach because you can actually play the whole song even if you stink. Presumably it?s a song you like, so why not hear the whole thing?

You gain access to the higher difficulties by defeating ?Demons.? Every few songs, the glowing eyes of the mysterious evil will make an appearance to taunt you before unleashing a mini-boss Demon. The Demons are apparently the enslaved souls of composers, and defeating them completes part of the ?Symphony of Souls.? This is the only part of the game that I feel deserves a little bit of an eye roll. It?s basically a glorified progress meter.

Upgrades and unlockables

So, the gameplay is good. It?s a fun shooter, but it would get old like so many other games were it not for the weapon and upgrade system. When you complete a song, you get the opportunity to unlock a new weapon. Some are going to be mediocre, but some others are rare and incredibly powerful. Each item requires both inspiration and the kudos obtained by reaching inspiration goals.

Your ship has four weapon mounting points, and you can attach whichever ones you like. Most are controlled by either right or left mouse clicks, but some fire automatically based on the music. For example, the subwoofer weapon fires a powerful blast each time the bass goes off. This is another example of Symphony?s fabulous integration with your music.

The weapons you unlock can be upgraded with additional points, and you?re going to need to do that as you tackle the higher difficulty levels. This upgrade system lets you play the game however you want. Just blast everything with a barrage of gunfire, or map groups of weapons to different mouse buttons and be precise. It?s up to you.

Graphics

The way Symphony works is great, but the graphics are the cherry on top. All the objects in Symphony are made from glowing polygons, and the lighting effects are amazing. The ships that fly into frame are luminous little wedges of death, spewing bright energy projectiles at you. Some of the bigger craft are impressively detailed, too.

The game is a little busy, but that?s part of the appeal. You feel like you?re really doing battle with your music as you peer through shimmering explosions to avoid return fire. The overall color scheme of the game will shift based on the tempo of the music. Blue is for the slower parts, but the color heats up as the action does. When you hit those fast choruses, the backdrop will be red and the enemy ships will be coming on fast.

Symphony is a wonderful game that?s part Galaga and part Guitar Hero. The controls are simple, the gameplay is intense, and the graphics are beautiful. If you have a big music library, this game is the gateway to accessible fun in large quantities. Symphony runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.?You can pick it up for just $10 at Good Old Games or any of the alternative outlets ? and you should.

Apple gets patent for in-cell touch display with impeccable timing

So Apple could be working on an iPhone with a thinner display, you say. Look what we have here, possibly in the nick of time: it's a newly granted Apple patent for a screen with in-cell touch, where the LCD and touch recognition are integrated into one panel instead of stacking up in separate layers. Apple's implementation would slim things down by either having electrodes share duties, both driving the display and taking finger input, or stuffing two electrodes into each pixel to accomplish the same goal. The net effect isn't just one of squeezing a device into a thinner chassis; the company also envisions costs coming down by reducing the number of parts and streamlining the manufacturing process. As envisioned, the screen looks like an ideal fit for a significant revamp of Apple's mobile display technology, although we'd be careful about assuming that this or any in-cell touch implementation is a lock for potentially imminent iOS hardware. Apple first filed the patent in early June 2007, before the original iPhone had even marched into a retailer -- display technology has come a long way since then.

Twitter. Facebook. Pinterest. YouTube. Tout. There are so many amazing ways to communicate with consumers on social media. Engaging potential customers via social-media channels could easily take up the majority of your day. And if you don't have time for it, it's a safe bet that most small-business owners don't have that kind of time or money to pay someone to manage it for them.

Take heart, fellow entrepreneurs. Although the task looks daunting, becoming a social-media rock star is possible if you approach it strategically. To start you on your way, I had an info-packed chat with Chicago social-media consultant Cle Hayden, who has managed social media for companies like TravelZoo and Ubid.

What are some of the common mistakes small businesses make?

Cle Hayden: Many small businesses want to be on every social outlet available. It?s best to pick one or two social media sites/outlets to communicate with your audience -- then do it well.

The other common mistake is selling more than engaging and communicating. Nothing is more irritating than to go to a Twitter time line or Facebook fan page and see nothing but ?20 percent off today? or ?purchase now and get free shipping.? Yes, selling products and services is important, however social media provides an opportunity for you to create brand ambassadors who will increase sales organically via word of mouth, build relationships with potential customers and better understand current customers. Talk to, engage with, learn from your clients... then include a promotion or two.

Why is it important to be strategic?

Cle Hayden: Just as you would put together a plan to execute the launch of a new product, you need a plan to execute your social-media efforts. Social media should be a component of your marketing mix and carry just as much weight and importance as devising a robust advertising campaign. Full integration is key; each marketing channel you use -- email, display, social --should work together to provide the desired results.

What are easy things to do to engage on social media?

Cle Hayden: Create a cool sweepstakes or contest; people love to win interesting prizes. The right kind of sweepstakes could lead to great viral activity and build your community base. Another idea would be to choose a theme or topic to discuss on a specific day of the week. The topic you choose should be something specific to your brand and interesting to your community.

For example, if you were a sustainable handbag company, pick a day out of the week to talk about materials used to create your product. Develop good photo content. Depending on the social-media platform you are using, a photo could inspire hundreds of ?likes.? Don?t forget to interact with your current online community: ask questions, respond to concerns and continue the conversation. Whatever you decide to do, make it fun and creative.

What social media resources would you recommend?

Cle Hayden: I would suggest picking up ?The Social Media Bible? by Lon Sofko & David Brake or ?Social Media Marketing: Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media? by Liana Evans.

Is this something any entrepreneur can do themselves?

Cle Hayden: Being strategic & creative is something most entrepreneurs are. If you are willing to commit an hour or so a day on social-media marketing, you could be very successful. However, I know most entrepreneurs are wearing multiple hats and adding something else to the ?to-do? list could be overwhelming, so it may be a good idea to seek out someone who could help.

Building communities via social media takes time, so be patient and consistent. It is also about developing relationships; be authentic and trustworthy when engaging with your base. Don?t be afraid to test things out. If there is something that you would like to try with your social media, do it. If you think it?s interesting, your community base may as well.

CHICAGO (AP) ? Democrats pounced on Mitt Romney's selection of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate Saturday, saying the pick showed a commitment to "budget-busting tax cuts" for the wealthy and greater burdens on the middle class and seniors.

President Barack Obama's campaign team said Romney's choice made clear that the former Massachusetts governor would be forced to adhere to the principles laid out in the House Republican budget ? authored by Ryan ? which they said would undermine entitlement programs crucial to middle-class families and seniors. Democrats said privately that the choice of Ryan could help Obama in states with large numbers of elderly voters, such as Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Obama met with top advisers Saturday at his campaign headquarters shortly after arriving in Chicago for a series of birthday-themed fundraisers scheduled for Sunday. Obama spent about two and a half hours at the headquarters.

The president did not publicly comment on Ryan's selection and aides described the headquarters stop as a typical weekly meeting.

Obama's campaign manager, Jim Messina, said in a statement that Romney had "chosen a leader of the House Republicans who shares his commitment to the flawed theory that new budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy."

Previewing the campaign's line of attack, Messina called Ryan the "architect of the radical Republican House budget" and said it would "end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system, shifting thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors." Ryan was chief author of a House-backed budget plan that would curb overall entitlement spending and convert Medicare into a voucher-like system in which future seniors would receive subsidies to purchase health insurance on the open market.

Less than two hours after Romney introduced Ryan as his running mate, the Obama campaign released a 90-second Web video showing footage of the men appearing together. The ad calls Ryan the "mastermind behind the extreme GOP budget plan" and includes an audio clip of Romney saying earlier this year that it would be "marvelous" if the Senate were to adopt the Ryan budget. The ad ends with this tagline: "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan: Back to the failed top-down policies that crashed our economy."

In an e-mail to supporters touting the video, David Axelrod, adviser to Obama's campaign, said it is the campaign's job to make sure voters get the facts about Ryan's record in the coming days.

"On so many issues, Paul Ryan, like Mitt Romney, has taken extreme positions that are out of touch with the values most American share," Axelrod wrote.

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida said Ryan had laid the groundwork in Congress for Romney's budget plan, which she said gives tax cuts to millionaires while punishing middle-class families. She said Romney and Ryan would repeat mistakes of former President George W. Bush.

"A Romney-Ryan ticket is sure to take us back and repeat the same catastrophic mistakes that got us into the mess we found ourselves in in the first place," Wasserman Schultz said in a statement.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has blasted Romney for failing to release additional years of his tax returns, said in a statement that by picking Ryan, Romney "has doubled down on his commitment to gut Social Security and end Medicare as we know it."

Romney's choice "demonstrates that catering to the tea party and the far-right is more important to him that standing up for the middle class," said Reid, D-Nev.

Obama had no public events planned in Chicago on Saturday but was expected to raise $3.5 million to $4 million at a series of fundraisers Sunday connected to his recent 51st birthday, including and event at his South Side home. The president was then taking a three-day swing through Iowa, the state that launched his presidential bid in 2008.

As TechRadar adequately reports, T-Mobile UK's confirmed that any new customer looking to snag the Full Monty data plan won't be offered an unlimited tethering feature on their all-you-can-have bundle. Effective immediately, the change is a sudden move from the carrier and it wasn't quite clear as to what made it backpedal on its initial "unlimited" promise, only saying, "From 8th August, tethering is not permitted for new customers under the terms and conditions of the Full Monty." Surely this is a small blow to UKers hoping to grab the Full Monty for the all-out tethering alone -- but hey, at least you've still got the data, texts and calls.

Responsibilities:

• Monitors and analyzes percentages, trends, forecasting, budgeting, project cost estimates, and expenditures.
• Forecast modeling for new products and strategies
• Works closely with corporate and field staff to evaluate actual performance compared to plan, prior year and forecast.
• Prepare financial presentations for board meetings and other special meetings.
• Assist management in developing assumptions regarding the volumes of business that could be expected under the current business plan and under alternative strategies, each in conjunction with each of the scenarios for possible rate conditions.
• After successful completion of contract period, position would be promoted to Senior Financial Analyst
