Design
The headset itself is a large pair of over-ear headphones with a flip-down boom microphone on the left side. They're black plastic, with some red and grey flourishes to make them look distinct. They're comfortable, and while they're slightly awkward to adjust thanks to very stiff connections between the headband and the posts connected to the ear cups, they fit around my head without pinching or feeling loose.

The controls are all placed just behind the ear cups, and feel distinct enough to be blindly controlled despite their small, slightly awkward positioning. When you're playing a game, watching a movie, or listening to music, you can switch between three preset equalizer modes using a slider switch just below the Power button. The top mode is a general media mode, the middle mode is a gaming mode that emphasizes explosions and bass, and the bottom mode is a competitive shooter mode that emphasizes ambient noise for situational awareness. A large two-direction button on the right ear cup adjusts the headset's balance between game audio and voice communication audio, which is useful in multiplayer games with voice chat, if you want to bump up team communication or emphasize ambient combat noise.?The control layout isn't very intuitive, though, and the Power, Volume, and Equalizer buttons are small, while the Game/Voice buttons take up the entire right side of the ear cup. The Logitech G930 offers a much better layout, with the controls spread over the ear cups, and the Razer Tiamat 7.1??has a convenient, large volume dial on its desktop remote. I do like that the boom microphone automatically mutes when flipped up; it makes multiplayer games more convenient.?

The headset automatically switches off if no audio is playing after a few minutes to save the battery, but the Power button is easy enough to tap when you want to restore the connection. ?It turns on and connects to the mixamp almost instantly with just a button press; you don't have to hold it down and wait for it to connect.

The mixamp serves as the transmitter, receiver, and charger for the headphones. It's a small, flat box with Power and Dolby 7.1 buttons on top and an auxiliary input, USB and mini-USB ports, and optical audio input and output on the back. The mixamp plugs into the computer or game console with one USB-to-mini-USB cable, and charges the headset with the other included cable. The USB cable only charges and serves as the voice connection; you need to connect the mixamp to your computer or console's optical audio output with the included optical cable. If you want to use the headset with an Xbox 360, a small port on the left cup lets you connect it to your controller to enable voice chat after everything else is hooked up.

The headset and mixamp both rest on an included stand. The mixamp sits on the base, and the headphones hang from a hook over the base, offering just enough room to run the charging cable from the mixamp to the headset. The stand is very light, so you might want to use some double-sided tape to keep it affixed to your desk or home theater system. It will stay in place with both the headset and mixamp on it, but once you take the headset off it's very easy to knock over.

President Clinton given key role at Democratic convention

WASHINGTON ? Former President Clinton will have a marquee role in this summer's Democratic National Convention, where he will make a forceful case for President Obama's reelection and his economic vision for the country, several Obama campaign and Democratic Party officials said Sunday night.

The move gives the Obama campaign an opportunity to take advantage of the former president's immense popularity and remind voters that a Democrat was in the White House the last time the American economy was thriving.

Obama personally asked Clinton to speak at the convention and place Obama's name in nomination, and Clinton enthusiastically accepted, officials said. Clinton speaks regularly to Obama and to campaign officials about strategy.

Clinton's prominent role also will allow Democrats to embrace party unity in a way that is impossible for Republican rival Mitt Romney.

George W. Bush, the last Republican to hold the White House, remains politically toxic in some circles. Although Bush has endorsed Romney, he is not involved in his campaign and has said he does not plan to attend the GOP convention.

Clinton will speak in prime time at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5, the night before Obama formally accepts the party nomination. The No. 2 on the ticket often speaks that night, but the Obama campaign has decided that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak on the same night.

Biden will introduce Obama on Sept. 6 before more than 70,000 people expected to fill an outdoor stadium in Charlotte, and millions more on television.

The vice president's speech will outline many of the challenges the White House has faced over the last four years and the decisions Obama made to address them, officials said.

"To us it's about deploying our assets in the most effective way," Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said. "To have President Clinton on Wednesday night laying out the choice facing voters, and then having Vice President Biden speak right before the president in prime time on Thursday, giving a testimony to the decisions the president has made, the character of his leadership and the battle to rebuild the middle class that's so central to our message."

Clinton's role at the convention was to be formally announced Monday. It was first reported by the New York Times.

State radio systems upgrade could cut regional dispatchers out of ...

Regional dispatchers are worried they will be out of the communications loop after state public safety departments such as state police, warden and forestry services and marine patrol upgrade their radio communication systems from analog to digital.

The upgrade for the state departments, known as the MS Comnet project, carries a price tag of about $55 million, and when it is done will allow state public safety officials from Kittery to Madawaska to communicate via radio, according to Jim Ryan, executive director for Penobscot County Regional Communications.

But regional dispatch centers will need to upgrade to digital systems to hear the new transmissions.

And Ryan said when the state originally went out to sell the upgrade to legislators and community officials they proposed an analog system. In anticipation, Penobscot County purchased analog equipment to coordinate with the state, the state announced they were going digital, he said.

He said it would cost $500,000 for Penobscot County to acquire new equipment that would be compatible with the state system.

Knox County Regional Communications Center Director Linwood Lothrop also expressed similar concerns about the new state radio system and said it would make it more difficult for county dispatches to keep track of what is going on with state units.

Lt. Col. Raymond Bessette of the Maine State Police said the digital upgrade has been necessary for years to meet capacity needs for state emergency personnel.

The upgrade will allow many more radio frequencies that will serve emergency responders when they respond to escalating situations.

Bessette said the state asked the vendor for the radio upgrade to allow its county and municipal partners to hear the state radio communications and that will be done.

The public will also be able to follow the radio communications, although they will need to purchase digital scanners, he said.

Their noses wrinkled, eyes squinted, mouths puckered as if they?d just licked the salt, drank the shot of tequila, and sucked a sour lemon. They despised the word empower because they?d heard it for years in the workforce. ?

?We should encourage,? they said. ?We?should encourage others to succeed, never quit, to go for what they want.??

?Okay,? I replied, ?consider the proverb ?Give a man a fish and feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.? I can encourage anyone to fish, but if they don?t have the resources to learn how, they can?t feed themselves. I empower them by teaching them how to fish and obtain the resources they need; thereby, enabling them to feed themselves. During the learning process, I?m encouraging each step of the way. We should do both.?

When we speak of empowering people, we give them authority or power to do something, or enable them to do something. By giving someone a rod and reel, a little bait, and instructions on how to fish, we?re enabling them to feed themselves . . . they have authority and power to do something about their circumstances.

Encouragement, on the other hand, provides hope or confidence, or support and advice to someone. In essence, we?re ?encouraging results.? ?While they?re learning to fish, we encourage them to continue on, imparting confidence that they can do it.

Throughout my career, I?ve considered my role as a technical trainer and professional educator to be that of a conduit who provides the tools and information learners need, whether I?m teaching adults or teenagers. I help to empower people with knowledge and the necessary skills, and encourage them to apply what they?ve learned to the job or their studies.

I see encouragement as a complement to empowerment, knowing that the two go hand-in-hand.

Empower or encourage? I say we do both.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Coke and Pepsi are chasing after the sweet spot: a soda with no calories, no artificial sweeteners and no funny aftertaste.

The world's top soft drink companies hope that's the elusive trifecta that will silence health concerns about soda and reverse the decline in consumption of carbonated drinks. But such a formula could be years away.

That's because the ingredient that makes soda taste good is also what packs on the pounds: high-fructose corn syrup. Artificial sweeteners like aspartame that are used in diet drinks don't have any calories but are seen as processed and fake. Natural sweeteners that come from plants present the most promising alternative, but companies haven't yet figured out how to mask their metallic aftertaste.

Despite the complexities, soft drink makers push on in their search.

"I can't say when it will be here, but it's in the reasonable future," said Al Carey, who heads the beverage unit for the Americas at PepsiCo Inc., the world's No. 2 soda maker.

There's good reason that soft drink makers are so eager to tweak their formulas. Once a beloved American treat, sodas are now being blamed for the nation's bulging waistlines ? two-thirds of the country's adults are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That, coupled with the growing variety of flavored waters and sports drinks, has sent per capita soda consumption down 17 percent to about 1.3 cans a day since its peak in 1998, according to Beverage Digest, an industry tracker.

In New York City, a ban on the sale of sugary drinks bigger than 16 ounces in restaurants, theaters and stadiums could take effect as early as March. The mayor of Cambridge, Mass., proposed a similar ban last month. And in Richmond, Calif., voters will decide in November whether to pass the nation's first penny-per-ounce tax on soda and other sugary drinks such as fruit juices and teas.

All the negative publicity has some once-faithful soda drinkers cutting back. Krista Koster, a 29-year-old who lives in Washington D.C., used to down about two cans of soda a day. Now she's trying to kick the habit and be more conscious about what she drinks.

"I've just been hearing how bad soda is," said Koster, who works in public relations. "You start considering a lot of the ingredients, whether it's fake sugar or the real sugar."

High-fructose corn syrup, the cheap sweetener that's used in most sodas, has the same nutritional value and taste of sugar. A can of regular soda typically has about 40 grams of high-fructose corn syrup and 140 calories. By comparison, the same amount of apple juice has about 38 grams of sugar and 165 calories, but companies can tout the vitamins and other nutrients juice provides.

Aspartame, the artificial sweetener commonly used in drinks such as Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi, doesn't have any calories. But some drinkers worry about the fact that the sweeteners are not naturally occurring in nature. Public perception has been colored by past studies that have suggested it caused cancer and brain tumors in rats even though The American Cancer Society says there's no evidence showing it has any link with an increased risk for cancer in adults.

The concerns have led soft drink companies to search for natural, zero-calorie sweeteners, including stevia, which is derived from a South American shrub. Natural sweeteners have neither the calories of sugar nor the negative associations of artificial sweeteners. The trick, however, is figuring out how to make them taste good in colas.

"Every sweetener has its own notes that need to be mixed with other flavors," said Mehmood Khan, chief science officer for PepsiCo. "It's a bit like an orchestra playing music, as opposed to one instrument."

So far, stevia is the natural sweetener that has gotten the most attention and is already used in Coca-Cola and PepsiCo products, including orange juice and bottled teas. But it's proving more difficult to hide the aftertaste in colas.

Soft drink makers are testing different extracts from the stevia plant that they hope will be easier to blend. They're also scouring the world for other naturally occurring sweeteners, such as one called mogroside that is extracted from monk fruit and a derivative of a berry called miracle fruit.

Coca-Cola, based in Atlanta, says it's currently testing additional drinks that use stevia and other natural sweeteners but declined to give details. The tests are part of the ongoing "home-use tests" the company conducts, in which consumers may be given a six-pack of a new product to try over the course of a week.

To accelerate the pace of such trials, Coca-Cola two years ago dedicated a production line at one of its plants solely to churning out test beverages. But taste isn't the only consideration for the world's biggest soda maker.

"Some of the very exciting (sweeteners) we're playing with are really small in terms of production and planting, and they need to be nurtured," says Katie Bayne, president of Coca-Cola's North American soda business.

Coca-Cola also is testing versions of its Sprite and Fanta that use stevia in Atlanta, Detroit, Louisville, Ky. and Memphis, Tenn. The drinks have about half the calories of regular Sprite and Fanta (70 per can, instead of 140 or 160, respectively). But the "Select" drinks fall short of the ideal because they have sugar.

PepsiCo, based in Purchase, N.Y., is also on the hunt for new drinks that use natural, no-calorie sweeteners. In 2010, the company entered a $62 million, four-year deal with food flavor company Senomyx Inc. to develop natural sweeteners and "taste enhancers" that can intensify sweetness. Coca-Cola also previously had an eight-year contract with Senomyx; neither of the partnerships has yet produced any products for commercial use.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group, the nation's third-largest soda maker, also is searching for the right combination. The company's line of flavored sodas, such as Sunkist and A&W Root Beer, may make it easier to mask the taste of natural sweeteners like stevia than with colas.

At a beverage industry conference earlier this year, Dr Pepper's Chief Financial Officer Marty Ellen said he thinks a "sweetener breakthrough" is achievable in the next few years.

Recreating the exact taste of extremely valuable brands such as Coke and Pepsi is a high-stakes game and companies don't want to rush any drinks to the market. But making a natural cola that doesn't have any calories isn't impossible. Smaller companies such as Zevia, based in Culver City, Calif., already make such colas using stevia.

Zevia is now sold in 10,500 locations ? including Kroger and Whole Foods ? up from just 850 locations four years ago. CEO Paddy Spence doesn't think Coke and Pepsi's efforts to come up with their own zero-calorie drinks will threaten his company.

"When consumers see a brand all of a sudden with different positioning, they see right through that," Spence said. "They'll say 'you're a sugar soda company that has a couple different stevia products.'"

Still, considering their enormous resources, it's likely that soda companies will eventually find a way to make natural drinks with no calories that taste good, says Mike Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

"If you look 10 years ahead, we're going to see a different marketplace for sodas," he said.

WAYNE, N.J., SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. and TOKYO, July 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ONXX), and Astellas Pharma Inc. (TSE: 4503) today announced that a Phase 3 trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of the addition of Tarceva^? (erlotinib) tablets to Nexavar^? (sorafenib) tablets did not improve overall survival for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) vs. Nexavar alone. The SEARCH (Sorafenib and Erlotinib, a rAndomized tRial protoCol for the treatment of patients with Hepatocellular carcinoma) trial compared Nexavar in combination with Tarceva to Nexavar alone. The safety and tolerability of the treatment combination were generally as expected based upon experience and use of the two products alone and there were no new or unexpected toxicities or changes to the respective product safety profiles observed. Data from this study will be presented at an upcoming scientific meeting. Nexavar is jointly developed by Bayer and Onyx. Tarceva is jointly marketed by Astellas and Genentech, a member of the Roche Group.

"The data from SEARCH showed that the addition of Tarceva to Nexavar did not provide additional benefit to patients with unresectable HCC," said Dr. Dimitris Voliotis, Vice President, Global Clinical Development Oncology, Bayer HealthCare. "The results of this trial confirm the efficacy and safety profile of Nexavar in the treatment of unresectable liver cancer."

About the Phase 3 Study

The SEARCH trial was an international multicenter placebo-controlled Phase 3 study that randomized 720 patients with advanced liver cancer. The study examined whether the addition of Tarceva to Nexavar prolongs survival as compared to Nexavar alone in patients with unresectable HCC. Cardiac ischemia and/or myocardial infarction may occur. Temporary or permanent discontinuation of Nexavar should be considered in patients who develop cardiac ischemia and/or myocardial infarction.

Gastrointestinal perforation was an uncommon adverse reaction and has been reported in less than 1% of patients taking Nexavar.

Uncommon but serious adverse reactions, including keratoacanthomas/squamous cell cancer of the skin and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, have been reported in clinical trials.

An increased risk of bleeding may occur following Nexavar administration. If bleeding necessitates medical intervention, consider discontinuation of Nexavar.

Hypertension may occur early in the course of treatment.? Monitor blood pressure weekly during the first 6 weeks and periodically thereafter and treat, as required.

Hand-foot skin reaction and rash are common and management may include topical therapies for symptomatic relief. In cases of any severe or persistent adverse reactions, temporary treatment interruption, dose modification, or permanent discontinuation of Nexavar should be considered. Temporary interruption of Nexavar therapy is recommended in patients undergoing major surgical procedures.

Nexavar can prolong the QT/QTc interval and increase the risk for ventricular arrhythmias. ?Avoid use in patients with congenital long QT syndrome and monitor patients with congestive heart failure, bradyarrhythmias, drugs known to prolong the QT interval, and electrolyte abnormalities.

Elevations in serum lipase and reductions in serum phosphate of unknown etiology have been associated with Nexavar.? Monitor patients taking concomitant warfarin regularly for changes in prothrombin time, INR, or clinical bleeding episodes.? Avoid concomitant use of strong CYP3A4 inducers, when possible, because inducers can decrease the systemic exposure of sorafenib.? Nexavar exposure decreases when co-administered with oral neomycin.? Effects of other antibiotics on Nexavar pharmacokinetics have not been studied.

Most common adverse reactions reported for Nexavar-treated patients vs placebo-treated patients in unresectable HCC, respectively, were: diarrhea (55% vs 25%), fatigue (46% vs 45%), abdominal pain (31% vs 26%), weight loss (30% vs 10%), anorexia (29% vs 18%), nausea (24% vs 20%), and hand-foot skin reaction (21% vs 3%). Grade 3/4 adverse reactions were 45% vs 32%.

Most common adverse reactions reported for Nexavar-treated patients vs placebo-treated patients in advanced RCC, respectively, were: diarrhea (43% vs 13%), rash/desquamation (40% vs 16%), fatigue (37% vs 28%), hand-foot skin reaction (30% vs 7%), alopecia (27% vs 3%),and nausea (23% vs 19%). Grade 3/4 adverse reactions were 38% vs 28%.

During post approval use of Nexavar, the following adverse drug reactions have been identified: angioedema and drug-induced hepatitis, including reports of hepatic failure and death.

Authorities: 11 dead after truck crashes in Texas

GOLIAD, Texas?? At least 11 people died Sunday and another 12 were injured after a pickup truck loaded with passengers left the highway and crashed into trees in rural South Texas, authorities said.

State troopers and Goliad County sheriff's investigators were investigating what prompted the single-vehicle crash and did not immediately know the names and ages of the victims. Gerald Bryant, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, told The Associated Press they were various ages and that he personally saw two young children among the dead at the scene.

"This is the most people I've seen in any passenger vehicle, and I've been an officer for 38 years," Bryant said, referring to the chaotic scene.

The white 2000 Ford F-250 pickup was heading north on U.S. 59 on Sunday evening when it traveled off the right side of the highway near the unincorporated community of Berclair in Goliad County and struck two large trees, Bryant said. The 23 people were loaded inside both the truck's cab and bed.

Six of those who died were still inside the truck when emergency crews arrived to find the mangled vehicle, Bryant said.

He said several of the surviving victims had life-threatening injuries. He did not have their official conditions but described them as "very serious." The injured were taken to various hospitals in San Antonio, Victoria and Corpus Christi. Berclair is about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio.

Border Patrol will assist with the investigation.

"It's unknown whether or not (the victims) were illegal, but it's possible," Bryant told the AP.

Crash investigators stayed at the scene into the late hours Sunday to assess the crash, which halted traffic on U.S. 59.

"It's been very chaotic here, and it's very traumatic," Bryant told the San Antonio-Express News earlier from the scene. "It's only first responders out here, and it's very solemn."

A Goliad County sheriff's dispatcher deferred comment to a department spokesperson, who did not immediately return a message left by the AP.

When starting out a fitness routine, it is a great idea to make payments to your personal trainer ahead of time so it gives you a commitment. If your money is already spent, then it is more likely you will follow through with the training sessions. Because you will wish to avoid wasting money, your attendance at the workout is far more probable.

Working out each day to maintain your fitness level should not be the only that is done. You must also fuel your body with nutritious foods. If you?re a bodybuilder, your diet will differ from someone that just wants to work out and shed some weight.

If you change up what you are doing, you will get the most out of your exercise routines. Those who are fit enough to run miles on a treadmill should be equally able to jog through their neighborhood streets. The different kinds of stress that the different exercises put on the body will yield different results. Your age doesn?t matter when joining a gym. A gym membership is not exclusively for young folks. Older people are just as welcome in gyms as are youngsters. Speak with a trainer to see what classes are offered. As you begin working out, you will begin to be more comfortable exercising around a wide variety of ages.

Fitness is a common goal of many people and a tough one, but it doesn?t need to be as people often believe. As a matter of fact, it can often be quite fun. This is not true! Simply exercising more often can do wonders to improve your fitness level. Keep these tips in mind if you want to be even more fit than you currently are.

Just 5.8 percent of the US population is Asian, but only 12 out of 535 members of Congress, or 2 percent, claim Asian heritage, two in the Senate and 10 in the House. Now the numbers may be starting to catch up. Including Pacific Islanders, 30 Asian-American candidates launched congressional bids this cycle, compared with 10 in 2010 and eight in 2008, according to the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies in Washington.

?This is a real opportunity for our community,? says Gloria Chan, president and CEO of APAICS. ?It really showcases our political power right now.?

While six Asian-Americans were defeated in their primaries, 12 other contenders ? 10 Democrats and two Republicans ? will advance to the general election.? Three running competitively for seats in New York and Illinois are poised to become their state?s first Asian-American US representatives. This campaign cycle features the greatest number of viable Asian-American candidates in history, says David Wasserman, House editor for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report in Washington.

Most are running as Democrats, and though Republicans will likely retain their House majority, the victories of several Asian-Americans could give the minority party a leg up, Mr. Wasserman says. He points to districts like Illinois 8th, where Tammy Duckworth is running, and California?s 7th, where Ami Bera is running, as key opportunities for Democrats to seize.

?Asian-American candidates certainly are critical for Democratic hopes of gaining seats,? he said.

For the past three-to-four decades, Asian-Americans have increasingly participated in both the Democrat and Republican parties, says Don Nakanishi, director of the Asian American Studies Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. Population growth, opportunities opened by civil rights movements, and the election of other racial minorities are driving forces behind the shift,? he says.

Mr. Nakanishi, who founded the National Asian Pacific American Political Almanac, says that last year?s edition included more than 3,000 elected and major appointed Asian-American officials serving at the state and federal level. The first almanac printed in 1976, he says, largely contained candidates from West Coast states and had a page count so small it could be easily stapled.

This political activism also reflects increased professional success in fields like medicine and academia, says Manan Trivedi, an Indian-American and a Democrat, running for the first time in Pennsylvania?s 6th district.

?It makes sense that the next step is to get involved in policy and politics,? Mr. Trivedi said, in a phone interview. ?That?s where the rubber meets the road.?

PHOENIX (AP) - Opponents of Arizona's hardline immigration enforcement law launched a new effort Tuesday aimed at thwarting a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that will allow police to enforce the so-called "show me your papers" provision.

A coalition of civil rights groups, religious leaders and business organizations filed a new request seeking a court order that would prevent authorities from enforcing a rule that requires police to check the immigration status of people they stop for other reasons.

The groups are asking U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton to block enforcement of the requirement before it takes effect, arguing that Latinos in Arizona would face systematic racial profiling and unreasonably long detentions under the contentious section of the 2010 law.

In their 65-page filing, the coalition claims Arizona's immigration law "is pre-empted by federal law and violates the Fourth Amendment" and could "undermine trust between the police and community members, for whom a routine encounter with law enforcement will become a lengthy detention."

They also say that immigration patrols in recent years by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio - the Arizona lawman known for his rigid stance against illegal immigration - demonstrate that the law's requirement will disproportionately affect Latinos. Though the requirement hasn't taken effect, Arpaio said his officers have inquired about people's immigration status in the past.

The National Immigration Law Center is one of the groups pushing the challenge in court along with the American Civil Liberties Union, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Asian American Justice Center, National Day Labor Organizing Network and others.

Matthew Benson, a spokesman for Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, said "this latest legal challenge is unsurprising as opponents of SB 1070 have indicated they'll go to any length in order to block Arizona's implementation of this law.

"The Supreme Court has already spoken unanimously on the constitutionality of this provision. Gov. Brewer is hopeful Arizona law enforcement will soon at long last be empowered to enforce SB 1070, showing that it can be done fairly, lawfully and in harmony with civil rights and the Constitution," Benson added in a statement.

The new lawsuit comes the same day that Arpaio criticized comedian George Lopez's recent profanity-laced tirade against the sheriff. It also comes as Arpaio touted the findings of a volunteer posse, which the sheriff claimed has found "definite proof that President Barack Obama's long-form birth certificate was a computer-generated forgery.

The Arizona Democratic Party said in a statement that Arpaio's investigation is intended to draw attention away from problems within his own agency, A call to Arpaio's office for comment wasn't immediately returned Tuesday evening.

In a separate case, the U.S. Justice Department has accused Arpaio's office in a lawsuit of racially profiling Latinos in immigration patrols. The sheriff denies the allegations. That case goes to trial Thursday in federal court.

Although a different challenge to the Arizona law by the Obama administration succeeded in getting three other parts of the law thrown out by the Supreme Court last month, the administration failed to get the "show me your papers" requirement overturned on its argument that federal law trumps state law.

The justices upheld the requirement that officers question people's immigration status, saying that the provision could be subject to additional legal challenges. The coalition is seeking to shelve the requirement on other grounds.

Arizona's law was passed in 2010 amid voter frustration with the state's role as the busiest illegal entry point into the country. Five states - Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah - have adopted variations on Arizona's law.

Legal experts say the groups face an uphill battle in trying to persuade Bolton to bar enforcement of the requirement because the lower courts might want to wait until the requirement - which won't take effect until at least Friday - is enforced to consider actual injuries from the law, rather than confront the potential for harm.

Even if opponents don't succeed in getting the requirement put on hold, some backers of the law are questioning the level of cooperation they will get from federal immigration authorities, who will be called to verify people's immigration status and be responsible for picking up illegal immigrants from local officers.

Federal immigration officers have said they will help, but only if doing so conforms to their priorities, including catching repeat violators and identifying and removing those who threaten public safety and national security.

If federal agents decline to pick up illegal immigrants, local officers in some cases will likely have to let them go unless they're suspected of committing a crime that would require them to be brought to jail.
